BLACK JAMES BOND, JAPANESE KNIGHT RIDER, & CHINESE ANGELA LANDSBURY
So...black James Bond, Japanese Knight Rider, Chinese Angela Landsbury (and John McClaine, natch) team-up to solve an impossible mystery and save the world!
That’s the high concept behind @matt.kindt.for.real and @wtorres1972 “BANG!” a comic book series from @darkhorsecomics .The book itself is a big, beautiful, mysterious adventure that’s full of action and trippy ideas...but it’s also a study on identity, both narratively and metatextually. James Bond is a suave black man, Knight Rider is a brilliant paraplegic Japanese woman, Sherlock Holmes is an over-the-hill Chinese sleuth...the series tackles the cyclical nature of the stories we love as well as the responsibility of storytellers to cast their characters and world in a modern context.
Cynics complain about “diversity for diversity’s sake”, but diversity is and always has been a potential boon to any story. Authors should challenge paradigms, and as long as we’re STILL telling stories with characters created 80-100 years ago, that includes recasting our favorite archetypes via race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.
“BANG!” is a fantastic and fun read, and by using inclusion as a virtue it has created a layered and nuance piece of entertainment that manages to provoke and not pander. Also, holy shit ya’ll, black James Bond is the illest!
